17 - May 2005 - Letter to James Dobson & Focus on the Family
A copy of a letter to James Dobson at Focus on the Family appears below. The author gave us permission to have the letter on our web site. The letter is so good that we cannot think of anything to add to it.
Dear Dr. Dobson:
I used to have a lot of respect for you and for Focus on the Family. You came across on the radio as a very caring and informed man. I am starting to have concerns about the ministry of Focus on the Family.
Recently, I learned a family wanted to present you with a letter. One of the family members was gay. News reports say they were arrested for trespassing at Focus on the Family.
You may have heard of Fred Phelps. He became notorious for organizing groups to protest the funerals of gay people, carrying signs that say things such as, "Fag dies, God laughs." Fred Phelps met personally with Mel White for a short meeting. I gather Fred Phelps was reasonably polite during the meeting. Fred Phelps appears to have been a better host to gay people than Focus on the Family. You and Focus on the Family should be ashamed of your Christian witness.
You may want to ask your staff to carefully read Matthew Chapter 25, so they can understand what is appropriate to do when people wish to give you a letter of concern. And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done [it] unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done [it] unto me (Matthew 25:40).
I would like you to contact the family that was arrested, to invite them to meet with you personally and to apologize for what happened. I would also like you to contact the police and to ask that all charges be dropped.
